Congress can reverse the administration’s attacks on the Endangered Species Act

Dear Guardian,

Continuous attacks on the Endangered Species Act (ESA) threaten to gut one of the most successful and powerful environmental laws of all time. But Congress can act to reverse the damage by passing the PAW & FIN Act (S. 2491), so write your senators today.

So far, the Trump administration is:

1. Making it easier for companies to build roads, pipelines, mines, and other industrial projects in areas that are essential to imperiled species’ survival;
2. Allowing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to include information on the economic impacts of listing during the listing decision process;
3. Making it more difficult to protect polar bears, coral reefs, and other imperiled species that are most impacted by climate change;
4. Removing protections from species listed as “threatened;”
5. Proposing to change the definition of “habitat” in a way that limits protection of areas that need restoration; and
6. Proposing to change “critical habitat” regulations in ways that would grant the federal government sweeping authority to exclude areas from protection on the say-so of extractive industries like oil and gas drilling.

Ask your senators to co-sponsor—and mostly importantly pass—the PAW & FIN Act, which would reverse some of these damaging regulatory changes.

Together, we can save the Endangered Species Act and threatened species.

P.S. Please do one more thing to help stop extinction! New proposed regulations would weaken critical habitat protections for listed species by giving extractive industries an outsized say as to what areas are “excluded” from protection. Tell the USFWS you don’t support the new regulations.
