Dear Guardian,
Like bald
eagles, alligators and pelicans? Let’s Protect the Law that Prevented their
Extinction.
Like
you, we Guardians love the Earth every day. On this Earth Day, let’s show that
love out loud by protecting the law that keeps our most imperiled wildlife from
extinction.
The
Endangered Species Act is our country’s most essential environmental law
protecting plants and animals: it brought the bald eagle, our national bird,
back from near extinction. Yet some members of Congress want to weaken the law
and clear a path for industry to mine, log, and drill away our natural
heritage. The threats to the law are very real and very serious.
The
Endangered Species Act protects wildlife and their habitats from out-of-control
special interests. The law requires common sense oversight of projects that
might otherwise destroy irreplaceable areas and our most imperiled plants and
animals. The law protects rare species like lynx and manatee from corporate
greed and carelessness. And it works: the law has already saved at least 227
species from extinction. We can’t let misguided politicians undermine this
important and effective law.
Tell Congress you value native wildlife,
and want to see all imperiled species protected.
Extinction is
non-partisan. If wolves and grizzly bears and wolverine and sage grouse are
driven to extinction by corporate greed and uncontrolled climate change, they
will be gone forever. Last weekend I visited Yellowstone National Park and
watched wolves frolicking in the sage brush and a grizzly bear munching on a
bison. Mine should not be the last generation to witness these amazing animals
in the wild.
Because plants
and animals do not have their own voice in Washington D.C., we must speak for
them. With your support, the Endangered Species Act will remain our strongest
law protecting rare plants and animals and we will continue to hold the line
against extinction.
For the wild,
