Dear Guardian,
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is proposing
to allow hunters to bait wolves. Horrifically, hunting with bait would occur
when wolf pups are present and they could be killed outright or slowly starve
to death without their parents. Join us in telling the Idaho Fish and Game
Commission that Idaho’s citizens, like the majority of Americans, do not
support the cruel practice of baiting.
Baiting has severe negative consequences for people,
wolves and ecosystems by increasing the spread of disease and likelihood that
people and their companion animals will conflict with wildlife.
Baiting makes it easier for trophy hunters to kill
more wolves and pups. It would endanger the recovery of Idaho’s wolf population.
Because the Idaho Department of Fish and Game cut back on population monitoring, we
may not know how trophy hunting is impacting the population. What we do know is
that baiting and hunting wolves is cruel, unethical and will result in great
suffering, not only of wolves but also their wild ecosystems.
You have three opportunities to raise your voice and
protect vulnerable wolves in Idaho:
1. Sign our petition and make your voice heard.
2. RVSP now to let us know you’ll join us at
the Idaho Fish and Game Commission public hearing and testify against proposed
wolf baiting. The information in this email is all you need to tell them
clearly: Baiting is bad for everyone.
When: Wednesday, July 26 at 7pm PDT Where: Best Western Kootenai River Inn, 7169 Plaza
Street, Bonner’s Ferry, ID

3. You can also submit your unique comments online through
July 26. Please click on this link and follow these instructions:
1.
Do you support allowing the use of bait as a method of take for harvesting
wolves? NO
2.
If baiting is approved as a method of take for wolves, do you support the
same restrictions on use of bait as are currently described for baiting black bears? YES
or NEUTRAL
3.
In addition to the baits allowed for black bears, do you support the use of
accidentally killed wildlife (i.e., road kill) salvaged by permit in accordance
with IDAPA 13.01.10 during seasons set by Commission proclamation during the
time period when bears are typically hibernating (e.g., Dec 1 – Mar 15)? NO
4.
Do you support the prohibition of the use of live bait in any form for the
purpose of hunting black bears and/or wolves? YES
5. For the Comment Summary
section,
feel free to copy/paste or adapt this text:
I oppose baiting of
wolves and any other wildlife. Baiting has severe negative consequences for
people and ecosystems, including 1) concentrating animals and increasing the
spread of disease, 2) habituating wolves to human sources of food and thus
increasing the likelihood that people will conflict with wildlife, and 3)
endangering companion animals that may be attracted to bait sites where wolves
are feeding.
Baiting violates the
fair chase ethics of hunting and gives unfair advantages to trophy hunters,
which the vast majority of Idahoans oppose. The use of bait for trophy hunting
animals is unethical, unrepresentative of Idaho values and has no place on our
public lands.
Let’s demand an end to
barbaric, outdated and inhumane practices like baiting. Wolves in Idaho and across our nation need you
to show up, speak up and never give up to ensure they continue to exist and
thrive in their wild home.
