Canadian Firm Looking to Mine Land Trump Illegally Removed From Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Mining had been prohibited when land was inside the monument boundary

SANTA FE, NM—A Canadian company, Glacier Lake Resource Inc., recently announced its intention to renew mineral extraction on public land formerly within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. The land had been protected from mining prior to December 4, 2017, when President Trump issued illegal orders to shrink Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments.

“This is the very reason President Trump illegally gutted Grand Staircase and Bears Ears,” said Chris Krupp of WildEarth Guardians, one of the plaintiff organizations that sued Trump last December to have the orders overturned and original monument boundaries restored. “President Trump is aligned with the mining companies and other robber barons who look at our public lands and see only dollar signs,” said Krupp.

Ten mining claims have been located and recorded, but so far Glacier Lake Resources has so far taken no further steps to develop them. “The plaintiff groups are watching this closely and are prepared to move in court if there is any damage on the ground,” Krupp said. “The mining industry is aware a court ruling restoring the monument boundaries would invalidate their claims.”
