Yates drops drilling plan in Bitter Lakes wildlife refuge

The Yates Petroleum Corporation has withdrawn its application to drill two additional natural gas wells in the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Roswell, citing environmental concerns and the high cost of drilling

The Roswell Daily Record reports that several entities, including WildEarth Guardians, have been successful in preventing further drilling in the sensitive and endangered Bitter Lakes national wildlife refuge.

John Horning, executive director of WildEarth Guardians, a New Mexico environmental group, said Thursday that some wildlife at the refuge would be “critically imperiled” by oil and gas exploration.

“We think it would mar the refuge’s scenic values as well as harm the native fish and wildlife that depend on the refuge,” he said.
