State To Revise Species List

New Mexico Endangered Species List Comes Up Short say Guardians

The New Mexico Game Commission will decide Thursday whether to list the lesser prairie chicken and headwater chub as state endangered species.

The Game and Fish Department recommended not listing the prairie chicken based on a nearly 10-year investigation. The headwater chub was recommended for listing.

Santa Fe-based WildEarth Guardians has criticized the department for not backing listing for the prairie chicken and other rare species.

The commission is also to consider recovery plans for the headwater, Gila and roundtail chubs and for the boreal toad, a high-elevation toad once found in north-central New Mexico.

The meeting will be at 9 a.m. at San Juan Community College in Farmington. The agenda and other information are available at www.wildlife.state.nm.us or by calling 476-8008.
