In light of their declines and possible extirpation in the region, Colorado Division of Wildlife initiated a recovery effort in 1999 that has, so far, enjoyed significant success.

The fate of the lynx in the Southern Rockies still hangs very much in the balance. The failure of the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to take the reasonable conservation measures they long ago promised increases the likelihood that the Southern Rockies lynx population will die out before it can become a self-sustaining, healthy population. These failures are compounded by Colorado's lackluster implementation of its own hunter and rancher education plan and the refusal of the surrounding states to adopt even these minimal measures.
