Featured Guardian: Lucy McDermott Wins a Contest and Protects the Environment

An Albuquerque native, Lucy was chosen out of about 2,000 girls from across the country to be a spokesperson

When 16-year old Lucy McDermott submitted an essay about the need to protect the environment to a Mudd Jeans contest, she hardly thought she’d be the focus of so much attention a few months later. An Albuquerque native, Lucy was chosen out of about 2,000 girls from across the country to be a spokesperson for the Mudd Jeans campaign, "Mudd Girls Move the World." After being awarded $5,000 to give to an environmental organization of her choice, Lucy did her homework. She called WildEarth Guardians to ask exactly how her contribution would be used if she decided to give to us. A few weeks after the interview, Lucy decided that WildEarth Guardians was one of two organizations who would be most effective with her donation.

Lucy’s story has generated interest around New Mexico; she’s appeared in magazine and newspaper articles as well as radio interviews. Lucy is an inspiration because she is not only protecting the wildlands that she loves with her contribution, but she is spreading awareness to fellow teens and adults about what they can do to make a difference for the environment.
