California Judge Reinstates Clinton Roadless Rule

A California District Judge has ruled that the State Petitions Rule, which the Bush administration used to replace the landmark Roadless Area Conservation Rule, was adopted without the necessary environmental analysis

Today a Judge in California ruled that the Bush Administration's attempt to override the Roadless Rule signed by President Bill Clinton was illegal. Today's ruling found that the Bush administration acted illegally in reversing the 2001 roadless rule, opening up tens of millions of acres on our last wild national forests to logging and road construction.

"This ruling puts New Mexico's priceless roadless forests back under protection and demonstrates how out of touch the Bush Administration is with America and our desire for wild, untamed forests." Said Bryan Bird, Forest Program Director for WildEarth Guardians. "The Bush Administration has always tried to give our public forests away to its corporate interests, but this is a great victory for New Mexicans that depend on these forests for clean and abundant water."
