Wolves in the American West

Under fire, wolves have been pummeled like political footballs since they were removed from the protections of the Endangered Species Act in the Northern Rockies and Great Lake states in 2011. Before he left office, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, the architect of these dangerous policies, was determined to go even further and strip their protections everywhere, even where wolves were absent—especially in the key missing links: Colorado, Utah, and northern New Mexico. Under the new Secretary, Sally Jewell, things could swing back towards wolf conservation. Write to your Congressperson now and demand that wolves’ protections be restored.

Ending the War on Wildlife

WildEarth Guardians’ long-term priority campaign to defund and eliminate the USDA’s cruel and harmful wildlife-killing program, the ironically named “Wildlife Services,” gains momentum. In May, WildEarth Guardians sent a letter that contained over 56,000 signatures from those who want to see Wildlife Services’ wasteful funding eliminated to Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, who sits on a key budget committee. Now we request that Congressional leaders, Senator Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), defund this awful program instead of cutting food programs for kids and seniors, disaster warning systems, and our beautiful national parks.

Endangered Species Protection

May 17th has been designated Endangered Species Day in honor of imperiled flora and fauna and the Endangered Species Act. This Endangered Species Day was especially notable because this year is also the 40th anniversary of the ESA. Guardians’ work for endangered species continues to bear fruit: so far, 56 unique, imperiled animal and plant species have gained the much-needed protection of the ESA as a result of our historic settlement agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. WildEarth Guardians is working towards a day when all species can be celebrated every day!

Power Past Coal

With news that carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere have reached a dangerously unprecedented high of 400 parts per million, we’re stepping up our efforts to rein in coal mining in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana.  Last month, we—along with partner groups—sent 135,000 petition signatures to new Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, calling on her to impose a moratorium on new coal leasing in the region. Many of these petitions came from you, our supporters and members, so thank you!
