May 17th has been designated Endangered Species Day in honor of
imperiled flora and fauna and the Endangered Species Act. This Endangered
Species Day was especially notable because this year is also the 40th
anniversary of the ESA. Guardians’ work for endangered species continues to
bear fruit: so far, 56 unique, imperiled animal and plant species have gained
the much-needed protection of the ESA as a result of our historic settlement
agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. WildEarth Guardians is working
towards a day when all species can be
celebrated every day!

In an unsettling decision
issued recently by a federal court in Nevada, WildEarth Guardians’
lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s highly secretive
and cruel wildlife-killing program was dismissed. In April 2012, we sued
the agency’s ill-named “Wildlife Services” for its failure to perform
updates using current science for the basis of its wildlife-killing
activities in the state. Each year, the federal government kills millions of magnificent wildlife
using outdated, barbaric means, and now, a federal court has left
citizens and taxpayers with no ability to seek redress. We plan to mount
an appeal of this troubling decision.

WildEarth Guardians and Xcel Energy announced a settlement of a suit
filed in 2009 over air quality violations at the Cherokee coal-fired
power plant in North Denver. Our settment affirms that Cherokee will
stop burning coal by the end of 2017 while also directing nearly
$450,000 to clean energy and green space projects for the neighborhoods
most impacted by the plant’s air pollution.

Former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar promulgated the
most regressive wolf policy in America since wolves’ restoration in the
mid-1990s. Under Salazar the
Interior Department systematically removed federal protections wherever gray
wolves exist, including the Northern Rockies and Great Lakes states. Salazar took his policy dangerously further and before he left proposed to remove
protections for wolves in places where they’ve yet to be recovered, including Colorado—the most important biological link in our continental vision of having wolves
from Canada to Mexico. Take action here and send an email to your Congressional representative. Advocate to keep wolves protected under the Endangered Species Act.
